Turlough O’Carolan (1670 - 1738)
Many famous composers were his contemporaries: Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Corelli, Vivaldi - and the music style of his time was marked by baroque vitality. Italy set the tone in Europe and traveling virtuoso violinists, whose sparkling cascades of sound could even be heard up in remote Ireland, influenced the musical life in a decisive way. Carolan was delighted with the ease of Italian music and combined it brilliantly with ornate Celtic melodies.
As one of the last great Irish harpers, he created music that has now become the Irish folk music, which is heard in concert halls as well as in small pubs on the west coast of Ireland. The ancient tradition of the Celtic bards lives on and the sound of the harp strings enchants us today. It's the magic of a time when music was still sacred and opened inner worlds to people.
The old Irish way of playing is perhaps nearest to the manner Carolan played. Unlike the classical style, here the hands are not strictly divided into melody and accompaniment: All notes with the stem written downwards are played by the bass hand, its thump often playing melody notes. The remaining notes with the stem written upwards are played by the the melody hand. The two hands complement each other.
