A musical journey ...
...through the fascinating world of ancient Celtic harp is the key aspect of this issue. Here we have compositions from harpers like Tom Conallon and Rory Dall O'Cahan as well as hornpipes, slow airs and songs from Ireland and Scotland.
Although much of this music can no longer be attributed directly to the harp, it is at the same time sure that the numerous original compositions by the old Gaelic harp tradition were picked up by the players of other instruments, when the harp tradition declined in the early 17th century. At this time Ireland was occupied by British forces under Oliver Cromwell. Playing the harp was banned for political reasons, because the songs of the bards and their Gaelic language had preserved the Irish heritage and posed a political threat to the British occupiers. Thus the decline of this thriving culture began.
However, the "classic" tunes of the Irish-Scottish harper tradition have survived and are experiencing a revival in our modern Celtic harps.
The old Irish way of playing is perhaps nearest to the manner Carolan played. Unlike the classical style, here the hands are not strictly divided into melody and accompaniment: All notes with the stem written downwards are played by the bass hand, its thump often playing melody notes. The remaining notes with the stem written upwards are played by the the melody hand. The two hands complement each other.
