Turlough O’Carolan (1670 - 1738)
"What a composer Carolan could have been, if he would have enjoyed an equally well-founded musical education as the famous composers of his time?" Grainne Yeats ponders in the preface of the complete edition of Carolan's works. In fact - after three years of lessons on the harp Carolan was left to himself musically. He learned composing by himself: perhaps by talking about it with other musicians, perhaps by listening analytically to other compositions – for as being blind he could not read books about composition.
The music of this fourth Carolan-book reports of Carolan's musical trek. Many of these works are beyond the scope of the then usual song and pave the way to small solo sonatas. Carolan experimented with the then usual compositional techniques: imitation of motifs, harmonic sequences and breaking down of chords adorn his incomparable melodies in the colorful costumes of the Baroque period
Carolan was a contemporary of keyboard-playing musicians like Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Scarlatti. His instrument was the harp, however - and so his original compositions give us Baroque works for the harp, whose melodic spirit is rooted in the depths of the Celtic tradition. Here a special kind of musical pleasure is waiting for us!
