Eric Satie, Three Gnossiennes Back

The Gnossiennes are intriguing and mysterious. Above their simple bass lines and plain harmonies we hear ornate, almost oriental melodies. The mood of these compositions is very quiet – like in a trance - a ritual, meditative dance, with no real beginning and no end.
Eric Satie dealt with mysticism and ancient religions, and it is possible that the title "Gnossiennes" refers to ritual dances of the Gnosier (the inhabitants of Knossos on Crete).

Historically speaking Satie consciously created a counterweight to the ever more complicated music scene of the late Romantic era. He comments ironically: "After a fairly brief youth I became an acceptable young man, not more. It was at this time in my life that I began to think and write musically. Yes. Fatal idea! ... Very fatal idea! ... Indeed, because it didn´t take long before I began to develop an originality that displeased. Thus my life was so unbearable that I decided to spend my days in an ivory tower. "
And thus the Gnossiennes are tranquility that became music, an island in the noisy world.
